WE SHOOT MIRRORLESS #3 | PPN | June 15TH, 2017

Picture

On this #3 “We Shoot Mirrorless” podcast episode, Scott and Marco discuss these new products and mirrorless topics:

  • Scott returned from a workshop in the Palouse and shares his landscape experience with his Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II.
  • Olympus contacted Scott and made him an “Olympus Visionary”. Scott shares how his ambassador title can benefit our show and our listeners.
  • Sony continues their lens lineup expansion and introduces two new wide angle E-Mount lenses: The Sony FE 12-24mm F4 G and the Sony FE 16-35mm f2.8 GM lens. We also discuss the overheating warning of the Sony a9 and the firmware update for this and other Sony cameras that came out recently.
  • Ricoh announced the WG-50 rugged compact with 5x zoom.
  • Olympus introduced the TG-5 with improved image quality and less megapixel.
  • And Nikon may ship the Coolpix W300 rugged compact with 4K video this summer.
  • DJI introduced the very small yet powerful Spark quadcopter (a.k.a. drone) for an amazing price of $499!
  • Scott discusses sensor size and depth of field misunderstandings and facts.
  • We have a PPN Photo Podcast Network group at Flickr (click link) that is open to our listeners and photos taken with all mirrorless camera brands. If you want to join just let us know through the "request invitation" button on the group and drop us a quick line there. We'll add you to the group then. And please ask for the invite via the web browser and not via the Flickr App. The invite process via the app has not been working reliably.
  • We have picked our monthly featured photographer and image from our Flickr groups. Our monthly We Shoot Mirrorless feature photo and photographer of the month is: Stuart Paton with his untitled image (click link)

Please support our show by using our B&H affiliate link (click here) that will not cost you a penny more than when you are buying at B&H without our link. And the more this link will be used to buy at B&H, the more giveaways we’ll be able to give back to our listeners through B&H. It really is a “win-win” situation :)

And please share this podcast with your friends and subscribe via iTunes. We would also love to get your feedback. Is there anything that you want us to cover on the show in the future? And we would appreciate if you could take a short moment to rate or post a quick review about our shows on iTunes.

Hey guys I love the new shows! I want to join your Flickr group but it says it's invitation only. How do I join?

Sorry you had trouble joining the Flickr group - it is a bug in their software - you can't do it from a mobile device. Go to a laptop or desktop and sign in. Thanks.

Scott - Congratulations on becoming an Olympus Visionary! It is well deserved both for your Bird Photos and your education/journalist activities.

I had been on the fence between the new GH5 and EM-1II for a new micro 4/3 camera. I finally made decision based on your comments and some other reviews and bought an EM1 two weeks ago. It is a big change from my Canon gear and my other Panasonic gear. It is going to be a bit of a steep learning curve.

If you have the ear of the Olympus engineers you might suggest that they provide a relative focus indication when in the Manual Focus mode. Panasonic does this and it helps some. It seems also like I read somewhere that I read the Fuji actually provide a hyperfocal indication with their cameras. A guy would think that it wouldn't be too hard do this with all the computing power in the new digital cameras.

Finally a question - Are you going to talk about the Pen F? It seems like it would be a great backup for the E-M1. While my GX8 and GX85 are nice cameras keeping three menu systems straight is kinda confusing for my 70 year old brain.

Thanks Rich it is an honor. I will pass along your feedback to Olympus when the engineers meet with the Visionary team. I just got my Pen-F so yes I will be talking about it. While it's unlikely I'll use it much in my bird photography (possibly for some birdscapes - what I call a landscape shot with birds in it - I'll mostly use it as a travel, vacation, casual camera and I will discuss it when I can. I understand on the menu systems. They are a bit deep for my tastes as well but maybe this is the new normal :)

Hi Scott

Great show once again. Couldn't agree more about the out of focus debate, I guess I am also from a time when we used to strive to get everything in focus hence when I trained as a photographer most of my work was on large format using camera movements. Ultra shallow depth of field has it's place but personally I want to see some background clarity to give a sense of context to the subject, it doesn't need to be sharp but should be recogniseable in my opinion.

Good to hear about the move to m4/3. AND good to hear someone else finally explaining the DoF, focal length and aperture correctly when comparing this to larger sensors. I recently got the GH5 and I absolutely LOVE it. Sold my D750 (kept a Df) and use GH5 as my main camera now (with an Olympus 12-100 f/4).

Hey Scott and Marco,

I really enjoyed this episode a lot. I may still be younger than Scott, but not much, so it with some satisfaction to hear validated my opinion that the latest generation of m43 finally has the image quality that works for me. I sold my D800 and lenses due to neck, shoulder, hip and back problems and last year I was impressed at the image quality of the GX85 which tells me that the quality of all current 16 or 20 Mpx m43 sensors will be just fine. I have prints on my wall at 12x18 inches and some were shot on the m43, Others on D800, Sigma dp2q, D7200, and the thing is no one, but no one, has ever questioned which camera I used! So, I will transition the last d7200 and 200-500 mm lens out in time and replace with either the eM1 ii or GH5 so I can have either the 300 mm Oly or the 100-400 Leica in my bag.

Scott, you spoke about getting more photos with the Oly because you were less fatigued. I just saw an email update from a friend who has the 100-400 Leica and he took it with him on a European Vacation. Now, what's so special about that? How many people would think to take a 800 mm Canon or Nikon lens ON A VACATION ???? He has some stunning photos that would not be captured in any other way. I can't wait.

Finally, Scott, now that you have some pull with Oly, can I put in a pitch for one of them to make a truly manual focus street lens. We still need zone focusing, and as interesting as the clutch and hard stops are, we need a 15 or 17 mm AND a 25mm all manual all the time lens with a hard manual focus and stops and dof scale. We need a Leica-esque 35 and 50 for m43, please oh please. f2 is fine.

Cheers until next time. Dennis.
