Q & A #2 | PPN | July 18TH, 2017

Picture

On this special Q&A episode, Scott answers many of the listener questions that he received after announcing his switch from the top of the line Canon full frame DSLR camera to a m4/3 system (Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark II).

Scott discusses questions about these topics:

  • Why switch to a smaller format sensor camera?

  • Does IBIS on sensor work as well as on a top of the line IS lenses for DSLRs?

  • How does the AF of the Olympus compare to that of DSLRs?

  • Is the EVF a limiting factor when shooting fast pace birds in flight?

  • What about image quality when moving to a smaller sensor camera?

  • What about the quality of the smaller m4/3 lenses compared to the big FF lenses?

  • Are there enough accessories available for m4/3 cameras?

  • Are there situations / genres where a smaller sensor m4/3 camera is not the first choice?

Great podcast Scott. It should allay some of the negativism of the micro 4/3 critics.

It brought up a few questions for me though. Do you notice any difference in quality between the 12bit raw capture files in the Olympus and the 14 bit raw out of the Canon?

Have you noticed any shutter shock issues with the Olympus? They mention it in the manuals for the OMD and Pen F (look in the index under Anti-shock). Shutter shock has driven me to distraction with the GX-8. Particularly with the 14-140mm Panasonic lens. I have had a love hate relationship with that camera all along because of shutter shock.

I have been using the Panasonic Lumix Micro 4/3 cameras for quite a while. I have enjoyed them a great deal. However, I just moved to the Olympus line. Mostly due to the video centric GH5. I'm finding the menu system challenging to say the least. Two inexpensive E books from Amazon by David Thorpe have helped with the OMD and Pen F. Mr. Thorp lays out the most of the menu options and goes into a little more detail on them. They have helped.

One last question - How come the Nikon 1 system doesn't't get a little more love from Nikon and consumers? Seems like it would be a great travel camera. There is a pretty complete range of lenses from wide to long telephoto. Yes it only has a 1" sensor but there are several well regarded non-interchangeable lens cameras with a 1" sensor.

Keep up the great work - Rich

Thanks Rich. There is some small difference when you print large (in the shadows) but most people wouldn't notice. Never had any shutter shock but I tend to use mechanical shutter. The menus are tough but if you stick with one system you can learn it and it becomes no problem. Don't know why Nikon 1 never took off but maybe the new system will work out better for them.

Thanks

Thanks Scott - I suspected that any loss would have to be in the finer color detail or dynamic range. The shutter shock is with the mechanical shutter. I never particularly noticed it with either the GX1 or GX7. With the GX8 Panasonic updated the firmware to allow it to automatically revert to the electronic shutter at shutter speeds where the shutter shock would is a problem.

I'm looking forward to your article for Olympus on how you use AF on the OMD. I hope some of it translates to the Pen-F.

Rich
